"Why Composers Cut?
As a composer of film music, the main obstacle to being truly creative is the lack of time. Due to the rapidly developing digital workflow in modern film making, this becomes more of an issue by the day. It is breathtaking to watch the speed of directors and editors, finishing a rough cut of their daily work the same evening, then sending it to the composer and demanding a finished piece of music on the fly. Quite often, some emotional aspects of composing along with the detailed production touches, the icing on the cake, so to speak, are left behind. To me, this has always left a bitter aftertaste. I always wished I could spend just a little more time to make the cues really sound good. But more often than not, the tapes were literally ripped out of my hands because they were needed immediately on the dub stage. I suppose I shouldn’t complain too much as some of these tracks made it to the top of the international charts. In a perfect world though, a composer’s cut, the equivalent to a director’s cut, should give the composer enough time to reassess and finish his “babies“ the way he always wanted to. Maybe even a bit more than that!

So, like going back in time, I dusted up my vintage gear, combined it with the latest technologies of recording and mixing and created this album. It contains re-recordings of some of my famous instrumentals along with original recordings of Donna Summer, Al Corley, Marietta, Chris Thompson and Udo Jürgens.

The Heat Is On with Keith Forsey
Quite noteworthy; the director of Beverly Hills Cop, Martin Brest consequently stated, that the original version of The Heat Is On, performed by my dear friend and co-composer Keith Forsey “would have been his first choice over the late Glenn Frey’s version”. Surprisingly, Glenn later bailed out on singing Shakedown, the title song for Beverly Hills Cop 2 and we almost ended up using Keith’s performance before we got Bob Seger on board at the last minute.

After a seemingly endless search of my personal archives, I finally found the original demo tapes. Keith and I had a blast remixing the songs. I think it is worth sharing with my fans.

"Warum Composers Cut?

Als Filmmusikkomponist will man möglichst kreativ sein, aber letztendlich bestimmt der enorme Zeitdruck das Ergebnis. Auf Grund der rasanten Entwicklung der digitalen Arbeitsweise wird das Tag für Tag schlimmer. Mit atemberaubender Geschwindigkeit fertigt der Regisseur am Abend eines Drehtags einen Rohschnitt seiner Szenen, schickt sie dem Komponisten und erwartet eine fertige Musik; mehr oder minder sofort. Man hat keine andere Wahl als sich diesem Tempo zu fügen. Dabei bleibt häufig die detaillierte Instrumentierung, die Liebe zum Detail auf der Strecke. Ich gebe zu, dass ich bei Zeitdruck immer besser werde. Ich fühlte mich nie überfordert, doch hinterließ es immer einen bitteren Nachgeschmack. Sehr oft hätte ich mir gewünscht, etwas mehr Zeit für die einzelnen Sequenzen zu haben, aber man riss mir die Musik buchstäblich aus den Händen, da sie dringend zur Mischung gebraucht wurden. Andererseits sollte ich mich nicht nur beschweren, da es einige meiner Kompositionen an die Spitze der internationalen Charts gebracht haben. Jetzt war es Zeit, dass meine Babys erwachsen wurden und ich mich endlich intensiv mit ihnen auseinandersetzen konnte; und ich mir einen lang gehegten Wunsch erfüllte. Was für den Regisseur der „Director’s Cut“, ist der „Composer‘s Cut“ für den Komponisten. Ich habe meine alten Synthesizer entstaubt und kombiniert mit neuerster Aufnahme- und Mischtechnik entstand dieses Album.

Neben Neuaufnahmen meiner populären Instrumentals und Originalaufnahmen von Donna Summer, Al Corley, Marietta, Chris Tompson und Udo Jürgens, hält es eine Überraschung bereit:
Die Originalversion des Titelsongs von Beverly Hills Cop, The Heat Is On, gesungen von meinem lieben Freund und Co-Komponisten Keith Forsey, hat dem Regisseur Martin Brest immer wesentlich besser gefallen. Wir haben uns damals trotzdem für die Glenn Frey Version entschieden, weil wir einen international berühmten Sänger wollten. Ein paar Jahre später, als Glenn uns unerwartet bei der Produktion von Shakedown aus Beverly Hills Cop II den Rücken kehrte, hätten wir fast Keith’ Version genommen; in letzter Minute konnten wir Bob Seger dafür begeistern; das brachte uns sogar eine Oscar-Nominierung.

Nach langer Suche in meinem amerikanischen Archiv habe ich endlich die Originalbänder gefunden. Keith und ich hatten viel Freude und Erinnerungen bei der Neumischung unserer alten Songs. Ich glaube es ist es Wert, dieses Gefühl mit meinen Fans zu teilen.
